The purpose of this self-enroll Canvas course is to provide an easily accessible location to share and reference all information regarding reading endorsement. While updates will still be shared in the Professional Learning announcements, it is highly recommended that all VCS educators use this site as the entry point to get information regarding Reading Endorsement.

		There are five 60-hour courses in the reading endorsement program. The courses are grounded in research, and the guiding principle of the program is that teachers will understand and teach reading as an ongoing strategic process resulting in students comprehending diverse text. The reading endorsement courses are: Competency 1: Foundations of Reading Instruction Competency 2: Application of Research-Based Instructional Practices Competency 3: Foundations of Assessment Competency 4: Foundations and Applications of Differentiated Instruction Competency 5: Demonstration of Accomplishment
		Florida's Department of Education requires that certain teachers be reading endorsed or certified in order to teach reading. The following teacher groups are required to be endorsed or certified: Per state statute (s. 1011.62 (9) (c) 7. (d) F.S., any K-12 teacher, including ESE and ESOL, who is providing intensive reading intervention (i.e. MTSS Tier 3 students as defined by the K-12 Comprehensive Reading Plan) Per state statute (s. 1008.25 (7) (b) 3 F.S., any teacher, including ESE and ESOL, who is teaching reading to retained third graders, including summer camp students. Teachers who teach any grade 7-12 state-coded reading course
		Any K-12 teacher providing tier 3 intensive reading instruction/ intervention must be Reading Endorsed or certified on or before June 30, 2021 per Florida Department of Education Commissioner Corcoran’s Executive Order 2020-07 issued on November 30, 2020. NOTE: Per the Just Read, Florida! office, educators who do not earn the endorsement or certification by this timeline will be limited to providing tier 1 and tier 2 reading instruction until the endorsement or certification is earned.

		Below are the different pathways to earn the reading endorsement: Fifteen (15) semester hours in reading coursework based upon scientifically based reading research with a focus on both the prevention and remediation of reading difficulties from an approved college or university program. Completion of an approved certificate from a program offered by an internationally recognized organization known for establishing standards for evidence-based interventions for struggling readers. At this point only one program has been approved, but we anticipate more in the near future. Literacy Solutions virtual coursework: participants must pay per course; however, VCS is offering reimbursement of each course upon certificate of completion. 		The Volusia County Schools Professional Learning office has received approval to continue offering the opportunity to all eligible teachers to be reimbursed for costs associated with meeting reading endorsement requirements. The endorsement must be added to the certificate by June 30, 2024. The following fees are eligible for reimbursement if completed between January 1, 2020 through June 30, 2024: $75 fee for adding the reading endorsement or certification to their professional certificate If you believe you are eligible for the reading endorsement fee(s) reimbursement, complete the form using This LINK .
